THE DESIGN CORPS
The Design Corps is an inclusive community of changemakers that is open to any human who identifies as an under represented practitioner in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math and Design. If you identify as a LatinX, Black, LGBTQIA+, Indigenous, Filipino, Indian, Asian, Women, Disabled, Aging or Veteran creator, maker or inventor who dares to design a better future today, We Want You!
In 2018, Designed By Us started a conversation with business, consumer, academia and government stakeholders across the world about establishing S.T.E.A.M.D. apprenticeships in the form of community, city, state and global service programs—a design corps, a conservation corps, a security corps, a climate corps, an infrastructure corps—that will provide a living wage, professional certification and union membership upon completion of service. Doing this powers a new generation of global citizens creators and designers to advance careers in an increasingly green economy.
There is ample precedent for these initiatives. The Peace Corps, VISTA, and AmeriCorps have proved invaluable in encouraging public service and providing opportunities for people to learn new skills, which have helped them find career paths and employment. Unions, local governments, universities, community colleges, and trade schools will play an important role in partnering with the various service corps in preparing the new green, S.T.E.A.M.D. workforce of the twenty-first century.
The Designed By Us Global Design Corps strives to create positive change in underserved, under invested in LatinX, Black, LGBTQIA+, Indigenous, Filipino, Indian, Women, Disabled, Aging and Veterans communities by using design, creativity, technology, advocacy and education to help people shape and reinvent their environment and address social, economic, and environmental challenges.
The Design Corps is a non-partisan, participatory issue-based design practice that places emphasis on the “triple bottom line” of sustainable design that includes ecological, economic, and social challenges across the world. The Design Corps seeks to broaden access the benefits of design to all of the humans on earth. By connecting the design process to global issues, The Design Corps helps further establish the public value of design to a broader audience and provides designers with a larger platform to affirm the value of all the creative and design disciplines.
