The Designed By Us Studio Programs are public service design and civic technology deployments. Design Corps members to use studio program frameworks to solve systemic problems with in constraints of now. The Designed By Us Studio Programs promote an agile, interdisciplinary research culture that unites diverse areas of interest, inquiry and problem solving. Each Studio Program is design to grow and evolve out of the Studio as new business models, spinoff companies, as exhibitions, media and performances, as S.T.E.A.M.D. talent transfer to member companies, and, perhaps most importantly, as the basis for continued exploration for others, both within The Studio and all over the world. Studio programs help women and girls take the lead—in their own lives, communities and in the world.
Inspired by the principles of Bauhaus, influenced by the systems design of Richard Buckminster Fuller and the UX Urban Design of Jane Jacobs, Studio Programs focus on solving humanity’s most challenging problems, today. Each Studio Program deployment acts as transformative learning experience and exploration that begins with ground breaking research and design techniques that employ imaginative narratives as visions of the future, speculative experimentation and design that probes the viability of building many worlds linked by the collective liberation, ecological and economic sustainability.
Designed By Us™ FutureSkills Curriculum introduces and encourages Design Corps members to explore several themes, including, human-computer interaction, visual, voice, gesture and sensory interface coding and design, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and robotics, tangible media, material science and 3D printing, space exploration and Astropreneurship, civic systems, public service and policy, communications, learning, design, and entrepreneurship.
Working with an ecosystem public and private sector partners, companies, and brands we create 21st century curriculum that provides people with the opportunities to develop their fullest potential throughout life, regardless of their starting points. No matter where you are in life – schooling years, early career, mid-career or silver years – Design Corps members will find a variety of resources to help them attain mastery of skills. Skills mastery is more than having the right paper qualifications and being good at what you do currently; it is a mindset of continually striving towards greater learning and excellence. Our unique approach to Studio Program frameworks and FutureSkills curriculum is a focus on the Human and our relationship to the Spaceship Earth.
Against a backdrop of advanced technologies from the physical, digital and biological worlds that are combing to create inventions at a speed and scale unparalleled in human history, a new, inclusive design leader and set of practices have emerged. In our multiconceptual, multicutural world, the design discplines of recruiting, research, writing, creative, voice, sound, art, accessibility, producers, user experience, graphic, interaction, industrial, fashion, interior design, architecture, data and social science, design tech and virtual reality design and engineering are being transformed for an entirely new reality. To ensure that new reality is a more equitable one, Designed By Us aims to instruct, enlighten, incubate, impact, honor, celebrate and secure the legacy of underrepresented talent in S.T.E.A.M.D.
At the nascent stages of an industrial revolution we are facing social, economic and ecological inequality and injustice. These problems exist because there are hierarchical, siloed, systemic barriers that disenfranchise underrepresented and under invested in communities from participating in the solutions that will shape the next 100 years of life on spaceship earth and in our cosmos.
DesignedByUs.org is leveraging this industrial revolution, a transformation and reinvention of business, economics and society, as an opportunity to make the world work for 100% of humanity, in the shortest possible time, through spontaneous cooperation without economic, ecological offense or disadvantage of anyone.
A Boston Consulting Group study found that companies with more diverse leadership teams have 19% higher revenues due to innovation. This finding is significant for governments, academia, industries and humanity where innovation is the key to sustainable growth. 22 similar studies demonstrate that diversity is not just a metric to be strived for; it is actually an integral part of a successful revenue-generating advancement.
Diverse perspectives foster innovation. Diverse teams perform better, and innovate faster. Diversity helps design market making leaders that improves culture and attracts better talent. Diversity in the business environment is about more than gender, race and ethnicity. It now includes humans with diverse religious and political beliefs, education, socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, cultures and disabilities.
Today, humans who identify as LatinX, Black, LGBTQIA+, Indigenous, Filipino, Indian, Asian, Women, Disabled, Aging and Veterans are blocked from full and equitable economic, ecological and civic participation. This problem exists because each of these communities and their leaders are often, hidden or written out of history, or lacking the resources and access to the publics consciousness. We believe the time has come to write a new inclusive chapter in human history. This chapter begins with optimism, bold ideas and an unrelaenting bias for action that moves people from cynicism and apathy to combatting systemic bias, discrimination and injustice with audacious hope and fearless fervor.
Designed By Us seeks to eliminate these systemic design problems by funding, enlightening, celebrating and securing the participation and legacy of underrepresented communities in all S.T.E.A.M.D. fields. Doing this stands as accessible acts of inspiration that give people purpose and permission to make their dreams a reality.
Our open source, scalable operating model uses inclusive Design Principles every day, whether we're discussing ideas, studio programs for new projects or deciding on the best approach to solving a problem.
