100M Mask Mayday Curriculum

The intent of this open source curriculum is to enlist all of humanity to collectively act.
Using the instructions below you can either make a CDC compliant sewn 3-layer mask or a Breathe3D respirator mask.

The following materials will make 5 sewn masks:

Mask Size Specifications

The following are the sizes that fit 95% of the global population. The measurements are per pattern piece, not overall mask size. The pattern allows for a .25 inch seam (6.35 mm) allowance on the edge of the mask & when sewing pieces together. 

X-SMALL (2Yrs+ toddler/child)

  • Filter & Pocket Liner Width: 3.5” (88.9 mm)
  • Fashion Liner Width: 4” (101.6mm)
  • 4.25” Nose-Chin (107.95 mm)
  • 2.5” Ribbon Seam Edge (63.5 mm)
  • 6” Long Ribbon (152.4 mm)  or  ⅛” elastic should be 4” Long Max (101.6 mm)
  • Nose Wire Pocket: 1” x 4” bias tape

 SMALL MASK (Youth)

  • 4” filter & Liner Pocket Width (101.6 mm)
  • 4.5” Fashion Liner Width
  • 5” Nose-Chin (127 mm)
  • 3” Ribbon Seam Edge (76.2 mm)
  • 10” Long Ribbon (254 mm) or  ⅛” elastic should be 8” Long Max (203.2 mm)
  • Nose Wire Pocket: 1” x 4” bias tape

MEDIUM MASK  (Adult)

  • 1” W x 6” L Nose Wire Pocket
  • 4.25” Filter & Liner Pocket Width (107.95 mm)
  • 4.75” Fashion Liner Width
  • 5.5” Nose-Chin (139.7 mm)
  • 3.25” Ribbon Seam (82.55 mm)
  • 10” Long Ribbon (254 mm) or ⅛” elastic should be 8” Long Max (203.2 mm)

LARGE MASK (Adult)

  • 1” W x 6” L Nose Wire Pocket
  • 5” Filter & Pocket Liner Width (127 mm)
  • 5.5” Fashion Liner Width (139.7mm)
  • 6” Nose-Chin (152.4 mm)
  • 3.5” Ribbon Seam Edge (88.9 mm)
  • 10” Long Ribbon (254 mm) or ⅛” elastic should be 8” Long Max (203.2 mm)

X-LARGE MASK (Adult)

  • 1” W x 6” L Nose Wire Pocket
  • 5.25” Width (133.35 mm)
  • 6.75” Nose-Chin (171.45 mm)
  • 4” Ribbon Seam (101.6 mm)
  • 10” Long Ribbon (254 mm) or  ⅛” elastic should be 8” Long Max (203.2 mm)

 

How To Design
A Sewn 3-Layer Mask

  1. Download & Print Patterns. Download 3-Layer Mask Pattern
  2. Prepare You Materials. Wash, Dry & Cut fabric
  3. Start Sewing. Either with a machine or by hand begin sewing according to the patterns.
  4. Create & Assign SKU Number. Assign a SKU numbers to each style of masks using this naming convention MakerName_CityState_MaskName-MaskColor-Size.  e.g. RachelBickley_BrooklynNY_FridasFiesta-Blue-L
    1. Label Batch of Masks. Using a StickyNote, 4x4 note card or Label write the batch number down.
  5. Certify, List & Sell Masks. Using the form below certify and add your mask to the Mask Marketplace. You will need the following information:
    •  1-2 photos of someone modeling your mask
    •  1 Photo of your mask on a white surface
    •  A title for your mask design
    •  A description of your mask
    •  Tags you wish us to associate the mask with.
    •  Location where your masks will be shipped from.
    •  List of Sizes, Variation of Colors in the batch.

 Step 6: Promote & Sell Your Masks listed at Store.DesignedByUs.org

  1. When your masks are listed in inventory you will receive a confirmation email with links to your masks.
  2. Using the Hashtags #100MMaskMayday, #ProtectedWeRise or #MaskUp promote your links in social media and in email.
  3. As you create more masks, take part in a 100M Mask Mayday Inventory call with other mask makers to ensure we have accurate counts of your masks.

Step 7: Sell, Ship & Distribute Masks

  1. When one of your masks sells on store.designedbyus.org you will receieve an email notification from 100MMaskOrders@DesignedByUs.org, containing 1- Packing Slip and 1 Shipping Label.
  2. Using the shipping label you recieve from 100MMaskOrders@DesignedByUs.org, print the USPS, UPS or FedEx label. 
  3. Print out a Thank You Note, Care Instructions and Packing Slip.
  4. Pack your mask in an envelope or small box and place the Thank You Note, Care Instructions and Packing Slip and in the box.
  5. Request a pick up from USPS or UPS
  6. Seal package and affix the label.

Step 8: Tracking Shipment & Recieveing Mask Payments

  1. Once your shipment has been entered into USPS we are sent a ship confirmation.
  2. Upon ship confirmation payment are released.
  3. Payments for sold masks are transfered via EFT, Paypal, XOOM or Western Union.

 How To Design A Breathe3D Printed Respirator Mask 

Step 1: Download Directions

Step 2: Preparing Materials For Print 
Two .stl files need printed per mask and are located at www.makethemasks.com. 

  1. MontanaMask.stl File
  2. Updated MontanaMaskFilterFrameWithFlange.stl File
  3. We suggest PLA+ material, but others such as ABS will work
  4. Takes 3-6 hours and varies printer to printer
  5. Designed to be printed without supports
  6. Print an array if possible, source file is included if one would like to modify
  7. Designed for Adult Large, scale to 90% or less for smaller masks

Step 3: Print & Make Masks!

 

 

Step 4: Assign Batch Number
Assign a batch number using this naming convention MMM_CityState_MakerName_Item#. 
e.g. MMM_BrooklynNY_RachelBickley_25

Using a Sharpie marker and StickyNote, or 4x4 note card, or a printed lablel write the batch number down using this naming convention: MMM_CityState_MakerName_ItemName_Version#_Color_Size.
e.g. MMM_AustinTX_RebeccaClayton_B3D_1.0-RED-L
This batch number is a designation that allows us to track inventory. 

 

Step 5:  Certify & Add Your Masks to Our Inventory
Using the form below certify and add your mask to our PPE Marketplace. You will need the following information:
